Computer Networking Protocols | Part 2

Internet Message Access Protocol Version 4 (IMAP4):

IMAP4 is used these days alot. IMAP4 is mostly used more than POP3, typically if you have POP3 email client that's gonna download an entire message to your device, maybe it's your laptop and than when you try to send that same message from your phone it's not there because it's been downloaded to your laptop "IMAP4" however can leave messages on the server you can create folders on server and you can organize your messages on the server. So regardless of how you are connecting via your PC or your laptop or your smartphone you are gonna be able tp see the same repository of messages, you are not gonna have some messages stored on this computer and other messages stored on this computer and other messages stored on other computer.

Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP):

It's gonna be away for us to query a common repository of usernames on the networks maybe it looks somebody up to make a phonecall to that person or to send them an email. This LDAP server can also be used authenticate us.
I have asked my students about what LDAP server they use over the years? 90% of report using microsoft active directory as there LDAP server.

Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS):

If we want to secure HTTP maybe for some online banking as one example or we are giving credit card information perhaps and we can do that by using TCP number PORT 3 and 8 by protocol called HTTPS.

  • To sum up we have got variety of applications that uses "protocols" and have " well-known ports"
